The department of Vaucluse, the Land of Provence, located between the Rhone and Durance rivers. Upper Vaucluse, The Provence of the Popes, has a very strong Roman prescence. The foothills of the Alps encounter the Rhone Valley plains, creating highly contrasted landscapes - the Dentelles de Montmirail, the Toulourenc River canyons, cypress covered hills. Nature reigns supreme. The village of Richerenches can be located in this little paradise and is an ideal spot to base yourself for exploring the region.
In this area, steeped in the past, you will find examples of Roman, Romanesque and Renaissance architecture. As you walk through the picturesque villages with their castles and churches set in a landscape of vineyards and lavender fields, you are transported through history.
Visit Orange, 34 kms, with its beautiful roman theatre which is classified as World Monuments by UNESCO. The medieval town of Nyons, 21 kms, in the heart of Provencal Drome. The town of Grignon was built in the 11th century and is now the most beautiful example of Renaissance architecture in the South East of France. From May to July the village is a mass of roses, with 160 different varieties. Valreas, 7 kms, The Popes' enclave. Since 1791, unique in France, Valreas with the three different villages of Visan, Richerenches and Grillon form an enclave of the Vaucluse with the Drome department, due to historical links with the Avignon Popes.
The area is surrounded by vineyards and Cotes du Rhône is one of the leaders in terms of its area of production and the volume of wine produced. A good selection might include a dry white such as a Cote du Rhone *AOC* or a Crozes Hermitage, a rosé such as Tavel and a stylish red such as Chateauneuf du Pape.
There are numerous concerts, exhibitions and Foires (fairs) to suit all tastes, i.e. Foires aux Vins, Fetes Traditionelles, foire a la brocante.
Richerenches, recently classified as 'site du gout' (good taste site) thanks to its famous truffles. It has the remains of the biggest and oldest Commandery of the Templar Knights in Provence. Situated in Upper Vaucluse, it is an area fragrant with truffles, lavender and wine. A little bit of paradise. It is a preserved site, laden with over twenty centuries of history. The village has its own bakery, two cafe bars with outside terraces where dawdling is a fine art. Don't miss the Marché aux Truffles, which takes place every Saturday morning from November to March. There are colourful and lively weekly markets at Orange, 34 kms, Nyons, 21 kms, Grignon, 9 kms, Valreas 7 kms.

Activities
The area offers lots of different sports from hiking, biking, horse riding, golf, canoeing. There is a 9 hole golf course at Clansayls which is a medieval village, 13 km away. Possibility to hire clubs and trolley, Tennis just 2 minutes by foot - 50 ff per week per family. There is a vast network of paths for biking.
Where to Shop and Eat
There are excellent and reasonably priced restaurants in the area. With lots of tips of where to go you will not be disappointed. Try Ferme Champ Rond at Valreas, 7km. The Provençal at Richerenches with its famous omelette aux truffles, or Auberge des Papes at Grillon.
There are lots of Brocante/antique shops in the large and rural areas and don't forget to do some wine tasting and maybe even take a few bottles home to remind you of this wonderful place.
